    Associative algebraic approach to logarithmic CFT in the bulk: the continuum limit of the gl(1|1) periodic spin chain, Howe duality and the interchiral algebra

    We develop in this paper the principles of an associative algebraic approach to bulk logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFTs). We concentrate on the closed gl(1∣1)gl(1|1) spin-chain and its continuum limit - the c=−2c=-2 symplectic fermions theory - and rely on two technical companion papers, "Continuum limit and symmetries of the periodic gl(1|1) spin chain" [Nucl. Phys. B 871 (2013) 245-288] and "Bimodule structure in the periodic gl(1|1) spin chain" [Nucl. Phys. B 871 (2013) 289-329]. Our main result is that the algebra of local Hamiltonians, the Jones-Temperley-Lieb algebra JTL_N, goes over in the continuum limit to a bigger algebra than the product of the left and right Virasoro algebras. This algebra, S - which we call interchiral, mixes the left and right moving sectors, and is generated, in the symplectic fermions case, by the additional field S(z,zˉ)=Sabψa(z)ψˉb(zˉ)S(z,\bar{z})=S_{ab}\psi^a(z)\bar{\psi}^b(\bar{z}), with a symmetric form SabS_{ab} and conformal weights (1,1). We discuss in details how the Hilbert space of the LCFT decomposes onto representations of this algebra, and how this decomposition is related with properties of the finite spin-chain. We show that there is a complete correspondence between algebraic properties of finite periodic spin chains and the continuum limit. An important technical aspect of our analysis involves the fundamental new observation that the action of JTL_N in the gl(1∣1)gl(1|1) spin chain is in fact isomorphic to an enveloping algebra of a certain Lie algebra, itself a non semi-simple version of sp(N−2)sp(N-2). The semi-simple part of JTL_N is represented by Usp(N−2)Usp(N-2), providing a beautiful example of a classical Howe duality, for which we have a non semi-simple version in the full JTL image represented in the spin-chain.     Review and assessment of latent and sensible heat flux accuracy over the global oceans

    For over a decade, several research groups have been developing air-sea heat flux information over the global ocean, including latent (LHF) and sensible (SHF) heat fluxes over the global ocean. This paper aims to provide new insight into the quality and error characteristics of turbulent heat flux estimates at various spatial and temporal scales (from daily upwards). The study is performed within the European Space Agency (ESA) Ocean Heat Flux (OHF) project. One of the main objectives of the OHF project is to meet the recommendations and requirements expressed by various international programs such as the World Research Climate Program (WCRP) and Climate and Ocean Variability, Predictability, and Change (CLIVAR), recognizing the need for better characterization of existing flux errors with respect to the input bulk variables (e.g. surface wind, air and sea surface temperatures, air and surface specific humidities), and to the atmospheric and oceanic conditions (e.g. wind conditions and sea state). The analysis is based on the use of daily averaged LHF and SHF and the asso- ciated bulk variables derived from major satellite-based and atmospheric reanalysis products. Inter-comparisons of heat flux products indicate that all of them exhibit similar space and time patterns. However, they also reveal significant differences in magnitude in some specific regions such as the western ocean boundaries during the Northern Hemisphere winter season, and the high southern latitudes. The differences tend to be closely related to large differences in surface wind speed and/or specific air humidity (for LHF) and to air and sea temperature differences (for SHF). Further quality investigations are performed through comprehensive comparisons with daily-averaged LHF and SHF estimated from moorings. The resulting statistics are used to assess the error of each OHF product. Consideration of error correlation between products and observations (e.g., by their assimilation) is also given. This reveals generally high noise variance in all products and a weak signal in common with in situ observations, with some products only slightly better than others. The OHF LHF and SHF products, and their associated error characteristics, are used to compute daily OHF multiproduct-ensemble (OHF/MPE) estimates of LHF and SHF over the ice-free global ocean on a 0.25° × 0.25° grid. The accuracy of this heat multiproduct, determined from comparisons with mooring data, is greater than for any individual product. It is used as a reference for the anomaly characterization of each individual OHF product

    Crowd-driven tools for the calibration and validation of Earth Observation products

    In recent years there has been a rapid diffusion in open access Earth Observation (EO) data available at global scales to help scientists address planetary challenges including climate change, food security and disaster management. For example, since 2016 the European Space Agency (ESA), via its Sentinel-2 satellites, has been providing frequent (5 day repeat cycle) and fine-grained (10 meter resolution) optical imagery for open and public use. As such, the EO community is faced with the need to design methods for transforming this abundance of EO data into well-validated environmental monitoring products. To help facilitate the training and validation of these products (i.e. land cover, land use), several crowd-driven tools that engage stakeholders (within and outside the scientific community) in various tasks, including satellite image interpretation, and online interactive mapping, have been developed. This paper will highlight the new results and potential of a series of such tools developed at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), namely the Geo-Wiki engagement platform, the LACO-Wiki validation tool, and Picture Pile, a mobile application for rapid image assessment and change detection. Through various thematic data collection campaigns, these tools have helped to collect citizen-observed information to improve global maps of cropland and agricultural field size, to validate various land cover products and to create post natural disaster damage assessment maps. Furthermore, Picture Pile is designed as a generic and flexible tool that is customizable to many different domains and research avenues that require interpreted satellite images as a data resource. Such tools, in combination with the recent emergence of Citizen Observatories (i.e. LandSense, GROW, GroundTruth 2.0, SCENT funded by Horizon2020), present clear opportunities to integrate citizen-driven observations with established authoritative data sources to further extend GEOSS and Copernicus capacities, and support comprehensive environmental monitoring systems. In addition, these applications have considerable potential in lowering expenditure costs on in-situ data collection and current calibration/validation approaches within the processing chain of environmental monitoring activities both within and beyond Europe
